5 To Knows before starting locs/dreads

Hey peeps.

I have been getting a lot of questions about locs ..If they are permanent or not or if they can be combed out, and I could sense the fear and uncertainty people have about having locs. They don't know what to expect or wether they will start missing their straight hair or not . I figured out this To Knows during my loc journey in my first set of locs and in my second set.

1. The big chop

To really get it right, you have to cut off your chemically processed(permed) hair. Its a difficult and awkward decision but worth it if you want to get healthier locs. However if you have natural hair you can start locs with that length of hair, no need of cutting it off, but be ready for a bit of shrinkage as your hair begins to lock.

2. Your hair won't loc immediately

Locing hair is not the same as braiding or weaving. The results are not instant. It will take from 3 to 6 months depending on the texture of your hair. However, there is a method called instant locing that will take about 5 hours and voila!! you get fully matured locs. You can check it out in my previous posts.

3. Negative energy

There are people who are just enemies of progress. They will tell you how your hair is thin, unattractive or how they miss your straight hair. The only way to overcome this negative energy with thunder and lightening is on my next point.

4. It's your decision!

When I first had locs my bro's reaction was " This hairstyle is for rebels and hard nuts!" lol. But since It was my decision, I was happy with it anyway. Whatever your reason is, may it be spirituality, tired of relaxers or just beauty, you know, that feeling of freedom, wear your locs with pride! After they mature and grow beautifully, your critics will be your number one fans. Trust me on this one!

5. You can do them yourself

Now this is my favourite point. I wish I had known this years back. You can definitely start your own locs at the comfort of your home. There are various methods to use for instance ,palm rolling, two strand twists, braid twist outs, interlocking, back combing, comb coils, instant locing and freeforming. I will cover each method for you in my next post. Stay tuned!

Thanks for passing by.

TREATMENT AND CONDITIONING

Hey loves! I feel so jelous of my locs today. They got so much attention from me!From massage, dye, conditioning, masking and just letting it relax. They must be super happy today!! Having blonde hair has been my thing for years. It defines my hair and me as a person. But one tricky thing with hair dye is that it can easily damage your locs. Your locs become dry and prone to breakage. You can avoid all this misfortunes by conditioning and moisturizing your locs properly. Dyed locs require extra care or else they will start thinning or even falling off!! Just to break it down for you, this is how I treated and conditioned my locs after applying dye. *After applying the dye, I rinsed off with cold water and dried my locs with a towel. * I then used nice and lovely treatment (for the first time)- I am trying out new products to see which works best on my locs before I settle on one treatment. * After the treatment I sat under a drier for 10 minutes. Then rinsed it off. *For conditio...

What is the difference between dreadlocs, sisterlocs and brotherlocs?

DREADLOCS Dreadlocs are simply hair that has been matted together and can be formed using various methods. SISTERLOCS They are smaller than dreadlocs and their installation takes longer than that of dreadlocs.Probably twice or thrice longer. BROTHERLOCS Brotherlocs are similar to sisterlocs but are a bit larger although smaller than traditional locs. Can you unlock dreadlocs, sisterlocs and brotherlocs? Some people claim its possible but in real sense its difficult and leads to too much breakage. Most people just chop off their locs when they don't want them anymore. So what kind of locs do you have? Stay blessed!

TO USE WAX OR NOT?

For a long time now, I have been battling with the same question. Many of my clients and friends have also asked me about wax and which is the best method to maintain locs. First of all wax or moulding gel is the most common method of locs maintenance. For the simple reason that it keeps the locs looking neat and smooth. But just like everything else, it has its pros and cons. From a personal experience, using wax in excessive amounts will damage your locs, they will start having build up (the whitish stuff) and it’s really hard to get it out. Your locs will appear untidy and you may even start hating them to the point of wanting to cut them. If you want to use wax for your retouch, please visit your loctitian, he or she will know the right amount of wax to use in retouching your locs and the right way to dry them. If the wax is not dried properly, it will stick to your locs and form build up. Apparently, some fellas opt to retouch their locs on their own as a way of saving money. T...
