DIY( Do It Yourself) LOCS

Hello there.

The other day someone asked me "Who started your locs?" and I plainly answered "I did". Ofcourse disbelief was written all over her face. There is a misconception that you have to visit a loctician to start your dreads.I am not hating on locticians, me being one.But sometimes they do what they think works best and not what the client desires.

Let me give you an example. I visited a loctician when I started my  first set of locs and I specifically told him that I wanted thick locs. He said that he will start locs that will be easier to style, so I told him I didn't care about styling. Well, he went ahead and started locs that I ddn't like.

So I decided, enough with locticians, and I started my second set of locs by myself. I can wash my locs as often I like , treat them as often as I like, do a scalp massage as often as I like and at the end of the day the outcome depends on me. Its amazing.

You might be wondering, how the heck do I start locs by myself? Well, first of all you must want to, you don't have to.  Lets look at some of the methods you can use to start your locs.

NEGLECT/FREEFORM METHOD

This one is the easiest method. If you stop combing your hair and do nothing to it for sometime, it will form dreads.

TWO STRAND TWISTS METHOD

The twists will form dreads in a few months. The twists will unravel as they lock up to form dreads.

BRAID LOCS/ PLAIT LOCS

When you braid your hair and then remove the braids, do not comb it. It will form dreads after two or three months.

These methods do not involve wax/ moulding gel. I do not recommend the use of wax if you don't have a drier at home because it will leave build up( that whitish stuff) on your dreads.Gross!

SOME LOC'ING TIPS

√Hair locks naturally with or without manipulation.

√ Hair locks in 3-6 months depending on your hair texture

√Water speeds up the locking process contrary to what locticians will tell you after they start your dreads.

√ Wash your hair atleast once in two weeks.

√Cover your starter locs with a satin head wrap when you sleep. This will prevent your hair from drying out,and lint from the pillows and bedding.

√Moisturize your starter locs oftenly. Use coconut oil or water.

People often have a misconception about dreads. But its just hair right? Hair that is growing from your head. So which is better, putting artificial hair on your head or growing your God given natural hair in a certain pattern as in the case of dreads/locs??

Are you compelled to start your own locs? You can save 30$ and still get to enjoy your loc journey.

Happy dreading!!

Yours loc head,

Mesh.

TREATMENT AND CONDITIONING

Hey loves! I feel so jelous of my locs today. They got so much attention from me!From massage, dye, conditioning, masking and just letting it relax. They must be super happy today!! Having blonde hair has been my thing for years. It defines my hair and me as a person. But one tricky thing with hair dye is that it can easily damage your locs. Your locs become dry and prone to breakage. You can avoid all this misfortunes by conditioning and moisturizing your locs properly. Dyed locs require extra care or else they will start thinning or even falling off!! Just to break it down for you, this is how I treated and conditioned my locs after applying dye. *After applying the dye, I rinsed off with cold water and dried my locs with a towel. * I then used nice and lovely treatment (for the first time)- I am trying out new products to see which works best on my locs before I settle on one treatment. * After the treatment I sat under a drier for 10 minutes. Then rinsed it off. *For conditio...

What is the difference between dreadlocs, sisterlocs and brotherlocs?

DREADLOCS Dreadlocs are simply hair that has been matted together and can be formed using various methods. SISTERLOCS They are smaller than dreadlocs and their installation takes longer than that of dreadlocs.Probably twice or thrice longer. BROTHERLOCS Brotherlocs are similar to sisterlocs but are a bit larger although smaller than traditional locs. Can you unlock dreadlocs, sisterlocs and brotherlocs? Some people claim its possible but in real sense its difficult and leads to too much breakage. Most people just chop off their locs when they don't want them anymore. So what kind of locs do you have? Stay blessed!

TO USE WAX OR NOT?

For a long time now, I have been battling with the same question. Many of my clients and friends have also asked me about wax and which is the best method to maintain locs. First of all wax or moulding gel is the most common method of locs maintenance. For the simple reason that it keeps the locs looking neat and smooth. But just like everything else, it has its pros and cons. From a personal experience, using wax in excessive amounts will damage your locs, they will start having build up (the whitish stuff) and it’s really hard to get it out. Your locs will appear untidy and you may even start hating them to the point of wanting to cut them. If you want to use wax for your retouch, please visit your loctitian, he or she will know the right amount of wax to use in retouching your locs and the right way to dry them. If the wax is not dried properly, it will stick to your locs and form build up. Apparently, some fellas opt to retouch their locs on their own as a way of saving money. T...
